Nov 19, 2017 The.308 was introduced in 1952, however Savage did not produce 99's in that caliber until 1955, as they had to lengthen the internal dimensions of the levergun to accept the slightly longer.308 cartridge. Savage started putting a letter in front of the serial number in 1968, and went to B, C, D etc. Each time the 6 digit serial number rolled.
All the threads on the forum requesting the date of manufacture are getting a little out of hand and thus we (the staff) have come to the conclusion that we will no longer be dating any rifles with a serial number beginning with a letter. This is because these guns aren't that old and the letter prefix itself will give you a relative idea of when the rifle was manufactured. The 'dating' service is intended more for dating and documenting the older collectable guns that are no longer in production and were made prior to 1968.The 1903's life was from 1903/1916 and in 1922 savage made a model that looked like the 1914 model but had a mag. THE STOCK IN BOTH GUNS SCREWS INTO THE FRAME THE SAME WAY. YES, SAVAGE HAD TWO TYPES OF STOCKS ON THE 03'S PLUS THE FANCY MODELS WITH ENGRAVING AND FANCY WOOD. I dont know of a particular serial number breakdown for the Savage Model 29. A good rule of thumb for that model is that octagon barrels are pre-WW2, round barrels after. Value is based on condition. Apr 16, 2015 Here is a Savage model 29 question, do the 29 As & Bs have a A or B stamped on them, Like 29A or 29B? Scp 087 for mac os. Tape stop for mac. I have been looking at pictures of them and I don't see any As or Bs. Here is what I got Savage model 29, serial #2459, 23' octagon barrel, ribbed fore arm, and a plain butt stock. It also came with 2 rails each about 1.5' long.

Additional Notes:
- Savage started using the serial number letter prefix to signify their compliance with the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 and differentiate their firearms that were made before (no letter prefix) and after (with prefix) the GCA went into effect on October 22, 1968.
- The 'F' prefix range is broken up into two groups:
- S/N F498821 or lower were made while the company was owned by an investment company while working to come out of bankruptcy protection.
- S/N F498821 and above were made after Ron Coburn and his investors purchased the company on November 1, 1995.
- The 'G' prefix coincided with the change to the AccuTrigger and the round-back receiver.
- Note that we don't have definitive data on newer guns with the J, K and N serial number prefixes at this time.
- You will notice that L and M were skipped as letter prefixes. L was likely skipped as it could be easily misidentified as an 'I' or '1'. M had previously been used exclusively for the Savage 10ML and 10ML-II muzzleloaders.
